Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1555–1612), a native of Venice, was the most important Venetian composer of the late Renaissance. He studied with his uncle Andrea Gabrieli and was an organist at St. Mark's Cathedral from 1585 until his death. —Roger Kamien. Music: An Appreciation.
This sonata is item number 13 in Gabrieli's Canzoni e sonate for various instruments published posthumously in 1615. After a brief introduction in common time, the sonata settles into triple meter. Tutti sections alternating with antiphonal episodes lead to a powerful coda in common time.
Michele Winter's edition for double string orchestra is an exciting introduction to the world of Renaissance antiphonal music.
